Tycoon games on a real-world map: what changes when the streets are real
Almost every transport tycoon ever made is played on a map that somebody designed. Grids, hex tiles, hand-placed towns, a landscape shaped to be readable and fair. A growing number of games do something different: they drop the whole genre onto the actual street network of the actual world. It sounds like a cosmetic upgrade. It is not — it changes what routing is, what planning rewards, and what it means to get good at the game.
The designed map has an opinion
A designed map is an argument the designer is making. Towns sit where they sit because the level needed a bottleneck there. The distance between two cities is a number chosen to make a particular vehicle worth buying. Nothing is accidental, which is exactly the point — designed maps are legible, balanced, and quick to learn.
The cost is that the geography has no independent existence. Once you have learned the designer's habits, the map stops teaching you anything. You are not reading a place; you are reading an author. Veteran players of grid-based tycoons will recognise the moment the world flattens into a solved arithmetic problem with scenery attached.
Real geography does not negotiate
Put the same game on a real city and the argument disappears. The street network was laid down over centuries by people who were not thinking about your delivery business. One-way systems exist because of a decision made decades ago. Two districts that look adjacent are separated by a river with one crossing. An industrial zone sits where it does because of a railway that may not even be there anymore.
None of that is balanced. All of it is true, and true turns out to be more interesting than fair. The map is not withholding a secret from you — it simply is what it is, and any advantage you extract from it is advantage you actually found.
Distance stops being a number and becomes a shape
This is the concrete difference, and it is the one players feel first. On a designed map, distance is usually a value on an edge. On a real map, distance is what the road does. Two contracts to districts that sit the same distance away as the crow flies can be nothing alike: one is a straight run down an arterial road, the other threads through a dense old quarter where every corner is a chance for something to go wrong.
The consequence is that you cannot price a job by glancing at the map. You have to read the route. Games built this way tend to make that reading explicit — showing you the real path, the real time, and the risk that comes with the streets you would actually be driving. And because the route is real, the skill of reading it is real too. Learning which corridors chain jobs together efficiently, where the fuel stops sit relative to the way you actually travel, which neighbourhoods punish a heavy vehicle — that is knowledge about a place, not about a ruleset.
The empty leg becomes visible
Real geography also surfaces a problem that designed maps tend to hide: the distance you cover while earning nothing. Getting the vehicle to the pickup is not free, and on a real street network it is often the part of the job that quietly decides whether the job was worth taking.
On an abstract map this is easy to paper over. On a real one it stares at you. The contract that pays best on the board may be across town from where your truck actually is, and the trip to get there is on your bill. Players who internalise this stop chasing the biggest number and start thinking about where their fleet is standing — which is, not coincidentally, the thing real logistics companies think about all day.
The honest trade-offs
Real-world maps are not a free win, and it is worth knowing what you give up:
- Balance is harder. The designer cannot simply move a city to fix an exploit. Tuning has to happen through the economy and the rules rather than the terrain.
- Some cities are more fun than others. A dense historic core plays very differently from a planned grid, and the game has to work in both.
- Legibility takes work. A real street network is visually noisy. Good implementations spend real effort on making the important things — your vehicles, your stops, the route — readable on top of it.
What you get in exchange is a world that keeps rewarding attention. There is no point at which you have finished learning a real city.
What to look for
- Does the vehicle drive the actual streets? Some games use a real map as a backdrop and move units along straight lines over it. That is a picture of a city, not a simulation on one.
- Is route choice a decision? If there is only one path and no trade-off between speed and risk, the geography is decoration.
- Does the trip to the pickup count? If repositioning is free, half the interesting planning has been removed.
- Can you see it happen? Watching a vehicle take the corner you chose is what makes the map feel like a place rather than a spreadsheet.
